Curiosity Is Your Career Superpower

Learning by Observing Leaders in Action

Some of the most powerful tools you can bring to your career isn’t a perfect GPA or well-designed resume, it’s curiosity and experience. Early in my career, I learned that observing the people who inspired me taught me more than any classroom ever could. Watching how someone leads a meeting, solves a problem, or builds relationships can give you a real understanding of what it takes to succeed in a role. When you’re curious, ask questions, pay attention, and observe people in fields that interest you, you are able to see possibilities for your own path.

For me, one of my earliest and most important inspirations was one of my first employers. At the time, she was a single mother and the owner of a boutique public relations agency in the San Francisco Bay Area. Watching her build and run her business, while balancing the responsibilities of being a great mom left a lasting impression on me. I paid attention to how she led client conversations, navigated challenges, and built strong relationships in the industry. I didn’t realize it at the time, but those everyday observations were teaching me lessons about leadership, resilience, and entrepreneurship that would shape how I approach my career today.

Today, I’m proud to carry those lessons into the work I do as a co-owner of a women-owned advertising agency. Building a business alongside another female founder has been incredibly empowering, especially in an industry where less than one percent of agencies are women owned. It’s a reminder that representation matters, and that women supporting and learning from each other can create real impact.

That’s why opportunities like job shadowing, internships, and volunteering are so valuable. They give you a front-row seat to learn from the talented men and women in action, understanding how they navigate challenges, make decisions, and build their careers.

You don’t need to have everything figured out right away. Sometimes the most important step is simply showing up, being curious, and soaking in what you can from someone who has walked the path before you.

Seek out the leaders who inspire you, ask questions, and pay attention because curiosity has a way of opening doors you never expected.
